As you may know, online advertising is displayed via a computer program known as adware – or advertising supported software to give it its full name. This dware has been designed to displays ads by ActiveDiscount on your computer. And it's not just PCs that can be affected by adware as tablets and even smartphones are not exempt from this powerful form of online marketing.
What does this adware look like?
ActiveDiscount ads come in all shapes and sizes – they may be neatly tucked away at the edges of a web page and are fairly unobtrusive, they might be flashing banners, or – in their worst incarnation they are relentless pop-up windows that just won't go away no matter how many times you click on them.
What is the purpose of this adware?
It is created by programmers in order to create a revenue stream that offsets the expenses incurred when they make free programs, software or files available to the general public on the Internet.
The problem with adware
The main issue that most people have with this adware is that it includes a spyware component that works to collect information about you and the websites that you visit. It tracks the products or services that you look at and then sends this data back to the adware's programmer. They, in turn, use this information to tailor make the adverts that you see. And obviously this increases the chances of you clicking upon them and driving traffic and sales to the website.
On the flip side some people will argue that by creating adware, you are benefitting from having access to files or programs that you would normally have to pay for - for free. Whether or not you are comfortable being spied upon is another matter entirely.
More problems with adware!
So being spied upon and having data about your Internet usage is probably not at the top of everyone's list of favourite things, but the real problems start when ActiveDiscount adware programmers collect your data and then sell this on to third parties.
This particular adware can also cause issues with other programs you have running on your computer and slow your operating system down due to it using your Internet connection to relay the data it is collating on you back to the programmer.
How do I prevent myself from becoming a victim of ads by ActiveDiscount?
There are a number of things you can do to make sure that you lower your chances of becoming an advertising supported software victim. Number one is to make sure you have a reputable anti-malware program installed on your computer, run it regularly, and make sure it's always the latest version. 1. First of all, download anti-malware software and run a full system scan. It will detect and remove this infection from your computer. You may then follow the manual removal instructions below to remove the leftover traces of this malware. Hopefully you won't have to do that.
2. Remove ActiveDiscount related programs from your computer using the Add/Remove Programs control panel (Windows XP) or Uninstall a program control panel (Windows 7 and Windows 8).
Go to the Start Menu. Select Control Panel → Add/Remove Programs.
If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, select Control Panel → Uninstall a Program.
If you are using Windows 8, simply drag your mouse pointer to the right edge of the screen, select Search from the list and search for "control panel".
Or you can right-click on a bottom left hot corner (formerly known as the Start button) and select Control panel from there.
3. When the Add/Remove Programs or the Uninstall a Program screen is displayed, scroll through the list of currently installed programs and remove the following:
- ActiveDiscount
- GoSave
- deals4me
- SaveNewaAppz
- and any other recently installed application
Simply select each application and click Remove. If you are using Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, click Uninstall up near the top of that window. When you're done, please close the Control Panel screen.
Remove ActiveDiscount related extensions from Google Chrome:
1. Click on Chrome menu button. Go to Tools → Extensions.
2. Click on the trashcan icon to remove ActiveDiscount, MediaPlayerV1, Gosave, HD-Plus 3.5 and other extensions that you do not recognize.
If the removal option is grayed out then read how to remove extensions installed by enterprise policy.
Remove ActiveDiscount related extensions from Mozilla Firefox:
1. Open Mozilla Firefox. Go to Tools → Add-ons.
2. Select Extensions. Click Remove button to remove ActiveDiscount, Gosave, MediaPlayerV1, HD-Plus 3.5 and other extensions that you do not recognize.
Remove ActiveDiscount related add-ons from Internet Explorer:
1. Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools → Manage Add-ons. If you have the latest version, simply click on the Settings button.
2. Select Toolbars and Extensions. Click Remove/Disable button to remove the browser add-ons listed above.
